| Security Challenges and Opportunities in East Asia |
NATIONAL MILITARY INTELLIGENCE ASSOCIATION 2008 SPRING SYMPOSIUM Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Fairfax, Virginia 11-12 March 2008
|
East Asia is the most diverse, dynamic, and national security critical region for the United States in the coming years. No region holds greater security challenges and opportunities than East Asia. The region is home to established and rising powers (Japan, South Korea, and China) as well as long term and growing threats (North Korea and al-Qaida). The region accounts for one third of the earth’s population; one quarter of global GDP; over one quarter of U.S. exports and almost 40% of our agricultural exports and over $800 billion in trade with the U.S. Eight of the ten world’s fastest growing economies are found in the region and the rate of political, social, economic and security transformation is unmatched in recent history. The security and military challenges for the U.S. are equally dynamic.
